Mivi, the company making smartphone accessories, is cracking with the Mivi Octave Bluetooth Speaker in this segment. It is the most expensive of the three speakers in the company's portfolio. Price of Rs 2,999, is it worth the investment? we find out

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Mivi Octave has a rated output of 16W
  • It has a 2600mAh battery that offers good battery life
  • It is available at a price of Rs. 2,999

If you are looking for an affordable Bluetooth speaker in the market right now, chances are that you have come across a lot of options. You can go for a small, compact speaker like the JBL Go 2 which lets you listen to your music on the go.

Pick something like the UE Boom 2 that offers really good audio and an IPX7 rating but isn't as easy to lug around. Multiple manufacturers have tried to design a good Bluetooth speaker that is compact, offers good audio quality, and does not break the bank.

Mivi Octave design and specifications

At first glance, the Mivi Octave looks like a shrunken Apple HomePod. There is a cylindrical shape with woven cloth around it. The top and bottom of the speaker is a matte plastic finish. At the top with the Mivi logo is a shiny bass radiator, which is a bit recessed in the body.

The bass radiator does not have a protective cover, so you will need to be careful to protect it from damage. Mivi offers Octave in Gray and Black color variants, and we had the following for this review.

Mivi Octave is light and has a lanyard attached to it, making it easy to carry. On the device there are four buttons - power / pairing button, volume up and down, and a play / pause button. They are made of plastic, and we think quality can be better.

Just below the button is an LED that shows the current state of the Bluetooth speaker. When the speaker is playing audio and when it does not, then it blinks the LED. Near the base of the device is a flap that covers the micro-USB port, 3.5mm audio input and a charging LED. You will also get a reset button here

The speaker base is made of rubber to ensure that it does not run while playing audio. Mivi keeps a 3.5mm Aux cable in the box with a micro-USB cable for charging. The speaker has an IPX5 rating, which means that it will be able to withstand water vapors to some degree.

The Octave has two audio drivers and a passive subwoofer, with a combined rated output of 16W and a frequency response range of 20Hz-20,000Hz. It supports Bluetooth 4.2 LE. The Mivi Octave weighs 318g and has a 2600mAh battery.

Mivi Octave performance and battery life

While the box of Mivi Octave is Rs. In the form of MRP 4,000, the official website as well as Amazon has listed the product in rupees. 2,999 Similar to JBL Go 2, its price has been kept in the block. However, we noticed that the Mivi Octave could get stronger than JBL GO 2.

After listening to some tracks, it is clear that Mivi Octave does not have a specific V signature. It felt like a flat sign, with only slightly enlarged lows and heights. This Bluetooth speaker can be found loud, but we would love to hear it at approximately 60-70 percent volume level. At this volume, the audio is decent, but it is not as hot with some of the other speakers we tested, such as the UI Wonderboom.

Mivi Octave makes most of its two drivers and is capable of providing stereo output. We were able to test it by playing Focus on Hocus Pocus on Apple Music. Cranked with quantity all the way, we were happy to hear that highs were in check and there was not much sound. However, bass has overcome modes and heights, causing deformities.

To check if the difference in output from high-quality audio has been made, we played Hotel California on speaker while it was connected via Bluetooth to MacBook Air. While streaming the song on YouTube, there was a noticeable difference in audio quality while running an MP3 file.

We tried to do the same test again, in which the speaker is connected to the laptop using an aux cable. Compared to Bluetooth, audio quality was better with Oaks cable with clear cables and more bass. You can independently control the volume of Mivi Octave when it is connected through the Oaks cable, but it synchronizes the volume control with the connected device using Bluetooth, like the other speakers.

We tried to use the Mivi Octave as a speakerphone, but our callers complained that we gave a distant voice, so that we needed to get closer to the speaker.

Since Mivi Octave is a big battery game, we could hear it for a long time before charging it in main to charge it. After listening to four hours close songs and then using an hour speaker (up to 70 percent volume), 40 percent of battery capacity was used to see Mirzapur on Amazon Prime Video.

VerDict

Mivi Octave provides good audio output until you are not deleting it in full volume. It has a good sound signature and is enough to fill a small room. Bass is predominant in high volume, but it is common between the Bluetooth speaker at this price range. Unless you use the Octave as a speakerphone, you will be able to get Rs. 2,999
